Kosovo Albanians celebrate Flag Day
Kosovo Albanians have celebrated their traditional Flag Day for the first time since the end of direct rule from Belgrade.
Celebratory gunfire and car horns were heard across the province to mark the day, five-and-a-half centuries ago, when the traditional Albanian banner ,a red and black flag bearing a two-headed eagle , was first raised as a symbol of resistance against the Ottoman Turks. Flag Day is also the anniversary of Albania's declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912, and of the first official appearance of the Kosovo Liberation Army two years ago. One of the main political leaders in Kosovo, Hashim Thatchi, addressed former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
He said Serbia would never regain control of the province, and vowed to pursue independence by democratic means.
